What is the vagus nerve?
It is the longest cranial nerve (X) within the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that is responsible for maintaining parasympathetic responses to stress. It extends from the brain stem to the lower abdomen, having nerve fibers reaching to all major organs between including the heart, lungs, digestive and immune systems. The sympatethic nervous system (SNS) division of the autonomic nervous system involuntarily responds to stress, fear, injury, virus/illness, trauma and danger also known as “fight or flight” or “get up and go” reactions. The parasympathetic nervous system division (PNS) of the ANS, also known as “rest and digest” or “calm, kind and kosher”, responds to the SNS reactions by bringing the body back into homeostasis; an optimal balanced state. The vagus nerve is directly related to the PNS inflammation reflex of the body by inhibiting inflammation production. If the SNS remains to be dominant, the PNS weakens and vagal tone decreases, this results in increased inflammation of body systems.

What is vagal tone?
Vagal tone is the health of your vagus nerve and its ability to control inflammation in response to stressors; this is essential for good health. Vagal tone is important for prevention and recovery from illness, stress or trauma. Bodies in stress/chronic stress elicit a low vagal tone and are more susceptible to an increased risk of disease or illness because inflammation is not controlled and symptoms begin to appear and accrue. The vagus nerve is responsible for the control of cytokine release. If we can stimulate the vagus nerve and activate its function, there will be a decrease in inflammation in the body, post viral symptoms and healing can begin.
